Setting the Scene: Staging & Preparation for Architectural Photography with William Manning
Architectural photography doesn’t have to be complicated or left entirely to the pros! In the first of two sessions, this fast-paced, practical workshop, photographer William Manning breaks down the fundamentals of photographing interior spaces in a way that’s approachable, repeatable, and immediately useful. Attendees will learn how to set up a basic interior photography kit, dial in the right camera settings for most conditions, and understand when technical details like shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and exposure bracketing actually matter—and when they don’t.
We’ll also dive into one of the most overlooked aspects of strong architectural photography: staging. Using real-world examples from client shoots, William will show how small adjustments, thoughtful preparation, and smart on-site decisions can dramatically improve final images while reducing post-production time and frustration. If time allows, the workshop will conclude with a basic hands-on demonstration, reinforcing techniques you can take straight back to the office and job sites!

William Manning Photography
William Manning is a professional architectural and travel photographer with nearly 35 years of experience capturing the built environment and the world beyond it. His “studio” is wherever the assignment takes him, ranging from architectural projects across the United States to international locations including Europe, Asia, and Africa. His career behind the lens began with outdoor, nature, and travel photography, eventually evolving into a successful and award-winning architectural photography practice serving the design and construction industry.
William’s work has been widely published through major stock agencies, including Corbis, Getty Images, and Alamy, and he is the author of several photography and travel books, including Cincinnati: A Photographic Portrait, Louisville: A Photographic Portrait, Fodor’s Ohio Travel Guide, and The Photographer’s Travel. In addition to his client work, he has led photography tours and workshops around the world since 1990, sharing his practical, experience-driven approach with photographers of all skill levels.
With a teaching style grounded in real-world application, William brings a no-nonsense perspective to architectural photography, focusing on preparation, efficiency, and getting strong results on site. His ability to translate complex technical concepts into approachable, usable techniques makes him a trusted resource for architects, designers, and marketers looking to improve how their work is visually documented and presented.
